Description: For this lesson, we co-taught silk scarf painting and creating designs based on the student's personal ideas about mindfulness.

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student. 

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.

 

Description: This lesson is a self-portrait painting lesson, where students will be introduced to diverse artists who use portraiture to communicate a statement about the subject. Students will then write artist's statements, showcase their art to one another, and communicate to their peers the artistic choices they made within their self portraits

Rationale: Students will learn how to draw/paint a self portrait and considering gaze, pose, and backdrop within a portrait. They also will learn how to use descriptive adjectives within an artist statement through the literacy lesson provided to them.

Literacy Lesson:

Description: This google form includes question prompts that will help students learn how to use descriptive adjectives when describing their art:

 

Rationale: These descriptive adjectives will allow the students to learn about responding to their own art and other's artworks by using writing and/or sspeaking.

Briscoe Western Art Museum

  • Description: While in San Antonio, I visited the Briscoe Western Art Museum.

  • Rationale: This was the first time I have been to this museum and it was really interesting seeing a museum with a singular theme and how different artists were able to execute art surrounding themes of Westernism.

Normal Editions: Brittney Denham

  • Description: This Spring I has the opportunity to attend the Normal Editions workshop on campus for a week to watch them proof prints commissioned by artist Brittney Denham.

  • Rationale: This was an amazing opportunity to meet an artist who would be featured in the printshop and watch the beginning of a print edition from the beginning.

NAEA Conference 2023

  • Description: This April, I was able to attend the National Art Education Association Conference in San Antonio, TX.

  • Rationale: It was the third time I was able to attend an art education conference in person and my first time attending the national conference. I attended sessions about new lessons to implement in my classroom, attended workshops, and got to meet other art educators in the United States as well with connecting with my peers.

Art Education Student Exhibition

  • Description: Early in the semester, I participated in the art education exhibition, "All About Art Ed", along with my peers.

  • Rationale: This was the first time I was able to experience setting up an in person exhibition including my own work.
