Art 309 Pt. 1

Saturday Classes

Weeks 1-3

Description: For the first 3 weeks of Saturday Classes, my group taught 6th grade. Our big idea for the lesson was "Environmentalism and Art", in which we used a lesson that involves techniques in ceramics. The students were instructed to briefly research an endangered species and create a clay jar or paperweight representing their species. They also created posters to accompany their projects which informed the viewer about their species and why it is endangered. This project encouraged students to create art that serves another purpose, such as activism or environmentalism. The lesson went well with the 6th graders and they were able to create high quality clay pieces and talk about why they created their work.

Rationale: We provided three diverse environmentalist artists, which our students were introduced to, to see how artists incorporated environmentalism into their art and give them ideas for their own work. The 6th graders were able to have class discussions about the purpose of their art-making and apply that to their own art. To begin our lessons, students did research about their species, planned their projects, and practiced writing about their art. After their beginning activities, they created their jars and paperweights out of clay, with the introduction of techniques to create successful clay pieces. They also were introduced to the idea of thinking about the displays for their projects when their created their accompanying posters.

Weeks 4-5

Description: For the last 2 weeks of Saturday Classes, my group taught 4th grade. Our big idea for weeks 4 and 5 was "Music and Mood". The students were taught to associated words about mood relating to art and to music. The students had two main projects for these two weeks. With one project, students were instructed to draw a self-portrait of a picture of an object that represents them, with a song of their choosing. The second project, students were instructed to create four square drawings based on four different moods: joy, sadness, excitement, and calmness.

Rationale: We provided two artists who created abstract art based on how they felt listening to music/sound, and these artists were Georgia O'Keeffe and Leonardo Nierman. Students had an activity where they associated three mood words to artworks from these artists which got them thinking about how mood can relate to colors and sounds, and this activity aided them in their first assignment when they created their first artwork about music. For both assignments, students had to consciously think about colors and patterns that they associate with moods and sounds.

University Galleries: Jess T. Dugan

  • Description: This semester I attended University Galleries' exhibition for Jess T. Dugan's exhibition "I want you to know my story".

  • Rationale: I first saw this exhibition with my 309 class where we were provided with guiding questions that we can use in our classroom to talk about an exhibition. I also saw the exhibition a second time on my own time. This was important because it helped me stay connected to local art and the artists at University Galleries can be taught in my own classroom.
